Are You Listening?

Written by Melissa Bellan

As we stepped out and planted our church there were so many questions in my mind? God, how is this all going to work? What are you calling me to do? How am I going to fit into this?

Sometimes we just need to be still and listen to what God is asking us to do.

There was one specific time when I was listening for God’s voice and His heartbeat. There was a young lady that came to one of our outreaches. She sat by herself and barely talked with anyone. I felt God leading me to just stop and listen to her. I approached her and sat and talked with her for a while. She began to share how she had lost everything. She was once a wealthy businesswoman, had a great marriage and had a daughter. My heart broke for her as I sat listening to her story. She had developed a rare skin disease, her husband ended up committing adultery, and their marriage fell apart. She didn’t know where to turn or what to do next.

Over the course of several months I would pick her up for church each week. I spent hours during the week on the phone just listening to her. She kept thanking me for listening and for believing in her. I continued to speak life into her every time we talked. Our church was able to bless her and her daughter with a full Thanksgiving meal. Then as Christmas came we offered her a registration for our give-a-gift program and she was able to give her daughter Christmas gifts.

Months went by and she eventually wanted to help me in the office. I can remember her helping me make crosses out of palms for Easter. We worked for hours making these crosses together. She would sit right beside me in the services and had completely surrendered her life over to Christ.

I remember her standing beside me and for the longest time she would just stand and sing. One particular day though she raised her hands in worship and the presence of God was so strong.

Sometimes we just need to be still and listen to what God is asking us to do.

That day it just so happened that the newspaper came and took pictures of the exact moment that she raised her hands. That picture ended up making it on the front page of the newspaper for everyone to see her transformed life. I didn’t know what was going to become of her when I reached out, but I listened and God saved her and put hope back in her heart. As I think of this woman’s story a scripture comes to mind.

“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”

– Proverbs 2:1-5

God helped me to see the way He saw her. Are you willing to step out and see what God’s heart is for you? Maybe he wants you be still and to just listen to Him? Or maybe he wants you to step out to the lonely and the broken. Maybe he has a treasure hiding in the darkness for you to find? Are you brave enough to go after what God wants? God made each of us unique in our own ways. He uses all of us in a special way to fulfill His vision and to further His Kingdom. Are you listening?
